Tape Recording on a Tascam
The advent of the digital audio workstation enabled recording engineers to capture with speed, consistency, flexibility, and high fidelity. By modern standards, the Tascam Porta02 MKii (1998) gives you none of these. Its charm, however, lies in the committal nature of its analog workflow.
I wanted to record a version of The The's "This is the Day" (Soul Mining, 1983) on to tape. I was able to reduce the instrumentation to accommodate the 4-track mix of the Porta02 MKii as follows:
Channel 1: Realistic Concertmate-200 drum program [Rock-1]
Channel 2: Realistic Concertmate-200 keyboard [Fantasy Piano]
Channel 3: Fender Mustang Guitar in to a Boss CE-3 chorus
Channel 4: Fender Jazz Bass
Channels 1 and 2 used Line In 1 and 2, respectively. Channels 3 and 4 both used the Guitar In preamp. All tracks were blended using the Tascam's mixer. The playback was captured by Logic X using the onboard Line Out. No further processing was done in Logic X.
