Live Remix with a Sampler and Tascam

I wanted to reimagine a song my band had released as a minimalist techno track. All the audio stems were available to me in Logic X, where I settled on a 120 bpm drum pattern, darker synth textures, arpeggiated pulses, and a repetitive bass groove. I bounced each track in to the Tascam 414 MKii using a Maxell high bias cassette (Type II). I also took five samples from the original track, down-pitched, and programmed them on to a Roland SP-404SX Sampler for real-time cueing.

For the performance, I used the Tascam as the main mixer, designating each channel for the following source:

  • Channel 1: Sampler playback of live cues

  • Channel 2: Alchemy arpeggiated pulses

  • Channel 3: Roland TR-909 drum pattern

  • Channel 4: Polymax saw-wave bass

Logic X captured the audio using the Tascam's Line Out. Fading, panning, and EQ were all adjusted in real-time.
